Chapter 11
Hugh found that visiting the graves of his long dead family made him feel oddly better instead of worse. He’d thought that after finding his fortune gone, stolen by that vile thieving bastard, that he might never feel anything but anguish again.
However, when Seda had shown such compassion while he tried to make peace with his mother and sister’s memory, he began to feel like he wasn’t alone in this new world after all.
Nothing was going to be easy for him, of course. He didn’t understand half of what the modern people said when they spoke, he didn’t think he ever wanted to try using a phone or a computer— in fact it seemed to him Seda was a bit of a slave to those two devices. And now he hadn’t a penny to his name. He should have been bereft, devastated, but when he watched Seda pacing in a small, nervous circle while talking on her ever present phone he didn’t feel either of those emotions.
When he first read the gloating note that had been left in place of his gold, he’d wanted to slowly twist the head off the man who’d taken it. Watching Seda, always moving, always wanting to take action, he felt that anger slipping away. That man was as long since dead as his family, (and hopefully he’d gone out in an agonizingly painful manner) while he, Hugh, was miraculously alive. Alive in a world full of opportunity, with a beautiful woman who for whatever reason, seemed determined to not only stay by his side but help him piece his life back together.
How could he stay stuck in a dreary past when he had so much to look forward to? As soon as Seda got off the phone and saw him watching her, he couldn’t help bursting into a grin and holding out his hand. An invitation to join him on his quest for a new life? Or just reaching out to her because he wanted to feel her hand in his once more? He thought it was both. She smiled back at him and hurried to return to his side, just where he wanted her.
“Are you hungry?” she asked breathlessly, her cheeks pink as if from exertion. She fluttered her hand around in the air nervously.
He found he was quite hungry and they made their way back to the car. She drove them back to the hotel where they were seated in the near deserted dining room. It was early for supper, but they’d been through quite a bit that day, and hadn’t eaten since a meager breakfast on the road hours earlier.
“I think we deserve wine,” she said, still with that nervous air about her. He placed a hand on her wrist, looking at her quizzically.
“Are you well, Seda?” he asked, concerned the loss of the fortune might have hit her harder than she was letting on. “Can we afford to dine here? I’m happy with that packaged fare we had earlier.”
She let out a long breath, visibly forcing herself to relax.
